About the association

The USS Abnaki Sailors association is an informal organization that was brought about strictly by volunteers who have been willing to assume a leadership position in the association's formation and continued growth.

Since 1989 when the first Abnaki reunion was organized by Joe Colombara and held in St Louis, Missouri with about a dozen people in attendance the roster has grown to over 400 names of former Abnaki sailors and more are being added frequently. Since that time there have been fourteen reunions, the first four of which was sponsored by Joe Colombara. Since 1993 the reunions have been sponsored by the following dedicated Abnaki sailors. The reunion in 1993 was sponsored by Herman Phelps in Virginia Beach, Virginia followed by, Jim Wrage in Rapid City, South Dakota, Don Fries in Atlanta, Georgia, Carl Immel in Green Vally, Arizona, Hal High in Daytona Beach, Florida, John Immel
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,  Orville Marks in San Diego, California, Jack Baines in Birmingham, Alabama, Joe Baker, in Pendleton, Oregon, Mike Holland in Charleston, South Carolina, Jeff Stanley in San Diego California.
