Hi Pete, I'd be happy to send you a picture of my father. I've scanned one for you but don't know where to email it. We had a very nice service for my father last week with appropriate navy honors which was not easy to do in South Dakota, about as far from the ocean as you can get. I've had quite a few emails from former shipmates from several of his commands and I'm pleased to know he is well remembered by so many.

It is with great sadness that I pass along the news that my father, Capt. Robert Thorson, who was CO of the Abnaki from '58-'60, passed away yesterday morning. He was 84. He spent 31 years in the navy and to hear him tell it he enjoyed just about every minute of it. I'm pretty sure he was able to attend at least one of the Abnaki reunions and there is still a picture of her under sail hanging in his office.

His wife Shirley is doing well, all things considered. They would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in a few months. Anyone who wishes to contact me should please feel free to do so.

Kudos to you guys for getting this back up. Although I get to keep up with many of you via the e-mail it is good to have this site. I know trying to keep the creeps out of a site like this is a big hassel, but there is always bottom feeders around. Some of you have tried Facebook, and that is not too bad a way to stay in touch, but be careful with your personel information........df

This post is from the son of a former crew member Brent Bailey Sr . My dad passed on the morning of marc h 21 in his sleep. He had a great time at functions he attended with you old salts . Just thought I would let you gentlemen know. His wife of 47 years and his sons both also navy vets miss him greatly. Fair winds and following seas , God Bless .

We all owe the SNIPE a great big thank you for a job "WELL Done" for all the work he does for the Abnaki association. Not only does he maintain our website he also prints and mails the Courier, which takes a load off me. You have all heard the old saying that “If you want a job done well give it to a busy guy”. This is certainly true in this instance.

We have lost a lot of great entrees in the old “Guest Book” but perhaps we can get most of the people to sign the guest book again.

Please feel free to check out all of the Abnaki website (there is a lot there) and contact us at any time for entries or corrections. If you are new please contact us, we love to hear from you.

Ahoy mates,

Please enjoy this new Abnaki guest book. The old one succumbed to the heavy Spam and robot attacks.
